About the NeighborhoodThe University District came into existence with the founding of The Ohio State University (OSU) in the 1870s. At that time, nearly all of the residents in this area were somehow employed or otherwise affiliated with OSU. Situated just east of The Ohio State University, this diverse area offers ample educational opportunities, art venues, employment and services, many within walking distance. Eclectic shopping, pubs and nightclubs, and ethnic eateries are just some of the advantages of life near one of the largest universities in the nation. In the last decade, the University District has been a major focus of substantial economic redevelopment and renewal by the city, area businesses and organizations, resulting in the “Gateway Initiative,” which has transformed the area into one of the best shopping and entertainment areas in Columbus. The southeastern portion of the Campus District is Weinland Park, an historically working class neighborhood that is the focus of extensive community planning efforts by the city of Columbus, OSU, local businesses and neighborhood organizations. Located just north of Italian Village and northeast of the Short North, this area is also seeing the benefits of being adjacent to what some consider the hippest art district in the state. Much is happening in the Weinland Park area, including the South Campus Gateway, the substantial rehabilitation of many subsidized housing units, a new Childhood Development Center being developed by OSU and a new, state-of-the-art Weinland Park Elementary School. The main North-South corridors such as High, Summit and Fourth Streets and ample public transportation make for easy commuting to downtown or northern suburbs. State Routes 71 and 670 are convenient for travel throughout the Central Ohio area.
