About the Neighborhood

The East Columbus Gateway Neighborhood is well located within the Central Ohio market. Located inside the eastern I-270 outerbelt, it is easily accessible to downtown as well as the Port Columbus International Airport and is situated in a job-rich environment. The neighborhood is in the midst of a complete makeover. The community offers an ideal environment for family living, creating a safe and tranquil environment for empty nesters and providing improved quality housing for working adults.

There are about 900 businesses with 21,000 private sector jobs within a two-mile radius of the neighborhood. This includes several hotels, large office buildings, fulfillment centers and industrial parks, particularly in the airport area. Many of those employed within a two-mile ring have white-collar jobs in managerial, professional, technical, and clerical occupations.

In addition to private business employment, there are approximately 8,000 public sector employees at the Defense Supply Center Columbus (DSCC) complex to the southeast of the neighborhood. The area also offers educational opportunities, next to Ohio Dominican University and just north of Bexley, home to Capital University.

Some of the most affordable housing in the City of Columbus is located in this area, many from $30,000 to $50,000. An ideal location to raise a family, the area will be welcoming a brand new, state-of-the-art elementary school that began construction in Spring 2006. The recent revitalization of Krumm Park offers ample green space, a pond, playground and recreation center.

The East Columbus Gateway neighborhood has also seen the recent completion of a $13 million plus public works project that included new streets and storm sewers installed on Fifth Avenue, two drainage basins to handle water runoff, reconstruction of Sixth, Seventh, and Rarig Avenues, sidewalks and curbs, community park improvements and additional sprucing up of the East Fifth Avenue business district. East Gateway’s location within an Empowerment Zone allows the neighborhood access to federal, state, and local programs designed to promote revitalization.
